I have worked with several KVMs in the last 15 years and have always been left wanting more. I pretty much got to the point where I just avoided them as much as possible. That changed a few days ago when I got a new laptop that I want to sometimes use with my larger display.

My setup is simple but does have a few things that made the search a little bit more difficult. I have two displays my Windows 7 desktop: a Dell 30″ and an Acer 27″. My plan was to find a KVM that allowed me to connect my laptop (2011 MacBook Pro) to the Dell 30″ monitor. One of the first things I noticed when reading reviews for the myriad of KVMs there are out there is they’re still quite a flaky slice of hardware. I also noticed many people having trouble getting high resolutions working well; the Dell 30″ runs at 2560×1600 and it was a deal-breaker to not be able to get that on both machines.

I ended up picking up an IOGear 2-port Dual Link DVI KVMP & Multimedia Switch (quite the mouthful). It’s model number is GCS1782. Getting the video to switch was actually quite smooth and required little to no tinkering. The only mistake I had made was picking up an Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter instead of a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. Both machines were switching seamlessly and I couldn’t notice any difference in quality whatsoever. Pretty happy at this point.

The only thing left to do was to get my wireless keyboard and mouse also hooked up to the KVM. This took a bit more effort but also ended up working nicely. My main difficulty came from the fact that my keyboard is a Microsoft Natural Wireless Ergonomic Keyboard 7000 and my mouse is a Microsoft Explorer Mouse (wireless). I experienced all kinds of problems from no input coming from either the keyboard or mouse to erratic behavior (e.g., one key press on the keyboard would generate 5+ characters or the mouse would only move left/right but not up/down). After spending over an hour of trial and error with it, here are the steps that ended up working for me.

Turn everything off. Power down your computers and disconnect the AC Adapter on the KVM.

Connect everything which should be pretty straightforward. Make sure to connect the keyboard and mouse to the two USB ports on the back of the KVM that are specifically meant for them.

Connect the AC Adapter to the KVM.

Turn on the computer that’s connected to the currently selected port on the KVM and wait for it to boot up. Don’t worry about typing or using your mouse yet.

Switch to the other port on the KVM by pressing the button on the front of the actual KVM.

Turn on the other computer and wait for it to boot up all the way.

Now, try to switch KVM ports by using your keyboard’s hotkey: press the Scroll Lock key twice and then the Enter key. If it swapped, then that’s goodness. If it didn’t, you’re on your own (sorry).

Try using your keyboard and mouse on both computers now. If they seem to work then you should probably just be happy at this point and not follow the rest of the steps. Mine didn’t work at this point so continue if you’re also experiencing problems.

On your keyboard, press and hold the Num Lock key, press the ‘-’ key, and release the Num Lock key. This should put you into HSM (Hotkey Setting Mode) on the KVM. You won’t be able to see anything to tell you this but if you heard some beeps from the KVM you’re probably in good shape.

Press the ‘M’ key now which should toggle the Mouse Emulation Control mode on the KVM. At this point, I saw my Windows machine recognize the mouse and start working perfectly.

If things don’t work for you at this point, you might want to keep messing with the various HSM keys you can find in the manual. I can at least confirm it worked perfectly for me (so far, we’ll see if I experience any flakiness over time) and that it did require some tweaks in my case to make it work.

The feature I really loved the most and missed whenever working on Windows was its inline search/find feature whenever you hit the equivalent of Ctrl-F on the Mac. Instead of the clunky ancient IE dialog box it added a small strip to the bottom of the browser window and allowed you to search from there. It was really nicely integrated.

Now, I’ve started using an add-in for IE that basically does the same thing. You can get the Inline Search add-in here.

I first tried Apple’s Mighty Mouse but just couldn’t get used to it. It also made me realize how much I depend on raising the mouse off of the desk/surface when moving the mouse pointer. The problem with it for me was that it actually tracked while raised more than other mice I have used. This ended up making the pointer move in the opposite direction I was trying to move while raised which proved to be too frustrating to me. Meg didn’t have this difficulty with it but we realized she doesn’t do nearly as much raising of the mouse as I do.

I was happy recently to hear about the new Microsoft mouse for notebooks. It’s got a tiny little name: Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000. Today, I bought one and immediately tried to get it hooked up. I got a little scared at first as I couldn’t figure out how to get OS X to recognize it and found that the mouse’s product page doesn’t show OS X as a supported OS but it does mention it in some fine-print towards the bottom of the page where it says: “If you are using Mac OS X, the Magnifier enlarges text and images on the entire screen.” This gave me some confidence that it would work and after a bit more searching I came across this post on a macrumors.com forum that has some instructions that did work for me.

So far, it works well overall. It seems like some of the mouse’s functionality isn’t accessible from OS X but it’s the stuff I wasn’t actually interested in for this machine like it’s “presenter” buttons. The button on the left side is currently bringing up Expose which is okay but I’m going to see if I can make it be a “back” button instead. The right button currently doesn’t seem to do anything but I’m hoping I can program it to do something. The scroll wheel seems to be working fine and clicking it works as well. Overall, it seems a little faster than my other mice on this machine and I haven’t changed any of the mouse settings but it seems to work quite well so far.

If that works as well as it looks on the video, it means I’ll be getting way more than my browsing/video-editing out of my Mac at home than I have been and that would make the original investment a whole lot more worth it.

I’ll hopefully get some time tomorrow to give it a shot and I’ll probably share my experience afterwards…

I’m writing this on a sweet new MacBook Pro. I got the 17″ model with 1GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive. It’s my first experience with a Mac since I was in junior high (15+ years ago) and I feel like a complete newbie–which is actually kind of exciting. It’s definitely a very nice machine and for the most part very intuitive but I think I’m just experiencing the difficulties more Windows experts/veterans would when interacting with a completely different OS. I’m likely to be posting about my experiences and struggles while I get accustomed to it.
My first mission is to get access my domain at home so I can get all of my MP3s and videos from the Mac. My other general curiosity is to figure out if there’s an equivalent keyboard shortcut to moving the caret around while editing text (e.g. ctrl-right arrow on Windows will move right a word at a time). It’s amazing how much one misses the simple things like that immediately. If anyone knows, please let me know but I’ll be hunting around a bit anyway…
