Took a quick break from work and decided to figure out another one of my favorite Frames songs on the guitar. I also attempted to get the lyrics down as I wasn’t able to find them anywhere on the net after a few searches. You can find the song on the Falling Slowly single from back in 2006.

Here’s another one off of The Swell Season album though a slightly different version is also on the Once Soundtrack. This is one of my favorite singer/songwriter type of songs from Glen and it’s one that he wrote together with Damien Rice. Since this is more of a strummy acoustic song, I’ve decided to just share how I think he plays it (from what I was able to see from my balcony view at the show a couple of nights ago) by listing out the chords up front and then laying them down on top of the lyrics. Anyway, hope this helps all of you old and new fans of one of my favorites.

The Swell Season, Live at The Moore (4.30.08)

Last night, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova played another great show at the Moore Theater in Seattle. It was also great to hear a few Frames songs in the set as well–especially considering 4/5s of The Frames were on stage. Some highlights:

Liam O Maonlai (Hothouse Flowers) and Ronan O Snodaigh (Kila) were great opening up. That said, they definitely saved the best for last. When they came back out to close the whole show and played Bob Dylan’s Forever Young it was pretty amazing. Probably one of the best live performances of a song I’ve ever seen and will for who knows how long.
Glen, very early on, shrugging off a seemingly constant stream of people who were compelled to engage Glen and Marketa in conversations between songs. In the end, it was just the right amount but it started off at a rate that was going to be frustrating to deal with.
Colm played a solo that wasn’t “Blue Shoes.” It was good to see him play something I hadn’t heard before. I don’t remember what it was called though.
Mixing in a few Frames classics, Fitzcarraldo and Star Star, was a happy surprise. Suffer In Silence was really unexpected. Totally looking forward to whenever The Frames come back out here next.
They had XXL t-shirts. This never happens. Meg got me one.

Might have inspired me to go tab out a few more of their songs…we’ll see. I’m definitely going to check out Liam and Ronan’s bands as well–a pretty talented couple of guys.

Swell Season Live DVD

Just noticed there’s a new DVD coming out on April 15th of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova playing at the Artists Den. Should be good stuff and it’s much cheaper than I would have expected too. This is the tab for the version off of the Once soundtrack album–which is significantly different from the one off the Frames’s album, Fitzcarraldo. Both are great but I definitely prefer the solo acoustic version off the soundtrack.

The Open E tuning made figuring this one out significantly harder for me (my tuning experimentation involves all of dropping down a half step and I rarely even do that) so I set off on some searches and found good starting points. Eventually, I found this great video though which turned out to pretty much dead on as far as I can tell. I still didn’t see it tabbed anywhere to this extent so I figured I’d get it down and easier to find. Also, Travestees, who made the very helpful video, has also recorded a video of himself playing the actual song which is also worth checking out.

Woohoo! Not too long ago, I posted about their nominations and tonight they won an Oscar! Very happy for them and looking forward to seeing them again soon!

Oscar/Grammy Nominees?

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova seem to have been nominated for an Oscar for the song, Falling Slowly, from the film, Once. They also got nominated for a Grammy for best sountrack album. Rarely do I find myself really rooting for someone to win, but this time I’ll definitely be watching intently.

After getting a bit of pressure via comments and emails, I finally got around to tabbing how I play the pre-chorus of Glen Hansard’s song, Falling Slowly. I’m pretty sure it’s not actually how he plays it but it should be close enough–at least it’s close enough in my book. It’s really hard for me to pick up the guitar part alone from the recordings I listened to so what I posted is as good as it’ll get from me for now. Here’s a link to the updated post. Another song that was released both by The Frames on The Cost album and Glen Hansard’s side project called the Swell Season with Marketa Irglova. It’s fairly accurate I think though not perfect. The chords on the chorus especially are worth trying different forms of the same chords as he seems to change it up at times.
