This was killing me for a few days. Whenever I opened up an image on my home Windows 10 PC, the Photos app would come up but never showed the image I opened. Turns out it would show the image, but after a very long time. Luckily, fixing it was pretty easy.
The root problem was I had a UNC ‘source’ that didn’t exist. The photos app seems to try to reach all sources and basically waits till it times out. We recently renamed our home’s NAS and the old name was still in the Photos app’s list of ‘sources’. Once updated, it instantly loaded images once again.
- Get to the Photos app’s main page (click the back arrow in the top corner till it says ‘Photos’ there and you see the three-line icon right under it).
- Click/tap on the gear icon at the bottom of the pane on the left.
- Scroll down a bit and you’ll see the ‘Sources’ section.
- Make sure all of the items in the list are valid.
