I’ve had a Motorola Q (original) for about a year and a half now and though I’ve had my fair share of problems with it, it’s been the only phone I’ve ever lasted this long with. The time has come now in my contract where I can upgrade to a new phone if I want to stick with Verizon or wait out a few more months for my contract to end and avoid the termination fees.

I’m fairly set on getting the same form factor so that leaves me primarily with one of the newer versions of the Q or the new Samsung BlackJack II. I’d heard that there’s a fairly significant difference between the GSM (AT&T) version of the new Q (Moto Q 9h) and the CDMA (Verizon) version (Moto Q 9m). From looking at the Motorola site, it looks like the GSM version is the clear winner:

  • Standby Time: 211 hours (CDMA) vs. 720 hours (GSM)
  • Talk Time: 272 minutes (CDMA) vs. 546 minutes (GSM)
  • 1.3 mega-pixel camera (CDMA) vs. 2.0 megapixel (GSM)

The first two, I’m told, are due to the better and more efficient processor the GSM version of the Q has. Looks fairly significant to me.

The only reason to stay with Verizon seems to be the network. I’ve heard from a couple of folks that the AT&T network drops calls quite often for them where I very rarely experience that on the Verizon network.

Still haven’t made up my mind though. I hate waiting to upgrade usually but the GSM version does seem worth the wait.
