Just spent about half an hour trying to get Adobe Reader to install on my new work laptop. It would launch fine, the process clearly alive in task manager, but nothing beyond that–it would just hang. Then I finally found this article. It turns out you need to (not sure in what cases, but I certainly had to) turn on XP SP2 compatibility on the setup executable before launching it. Grr….
