When I was in Dubai a couple of weeks ago I found myself curious about VoIP and what options I had while staying there as far as cheap methods to call home went. I ended up using the Windows Live Messenger feature to call land-line phones from my computer via Verizon for what are extremely reasonable rates. If you haven’t tried it yet, I’d definitely recommend checking it out as it was super simple to set up and get going on and price wise and call quality were both perfect. All you need to do is download the latest beta of Windows Live Messenger and click on the phone icon once you’re up and running.
A few minutes ago, I ran across the Windows Live Messenger Phone. It’s made by Uniden and looks pretty cool. It’s available for $99 at Best Buy. I just wish it had more details about how it really works. It’s clear it allows you to make voice calls to your Messenger buddies as well as regular land-line calls but I can’t confirm whether it allows you to use the service I mentioned in the paragraph above. Here’s the most detailed feature list I was able to find. Anyone have one of these or tried one that might have some more data?

Gus, are you still able to use the phone feature from windowsl ive messenger in dubai? i think it has been disabled.
Randa, I was in Dubai from May 12 – May 20th and it worked perfectly fine and I made about four or five calls in all. Are you in UAE now and it doesn’t work for you?
Gus, I live in Dubai and haveinstalled the live messenger with the live call service. The first few days (beginning of June) I made some telephone calls to landlines and it worked perfectly, but after a few days it just didn’t work anymore. I think they have disabled this feature.
Rogier, thanks for the info. I’m sure it worked for me without any problems when I was there but I think what you’re seeing is what Randa was probably running into. That’s unfortunate though as it seemed to work really well. Thanks though!
